ACCESS LIFE
ACCESS LIFE
As part of my community service, I worked with Access Life Pediatric Support Center, an organization that provides temporary housing and holistic support to families of children undergoing cancer treatment. Many of these families come from rural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, facing immense financial, emotional, and logistical challenges while navigating their child’s treatment. My role was to engage with both the children and their caregivers, providing educational support, emotional well-being activities, and assistance in spreading awareness about their struggles. Through interactive sessions, creative activities, and direct engagement, I aimed to contribute to their quality of life, even if in small but meaningful ways.
Impact on the Community
My work with the community primarily focused on addressing gaps in education, emotional support, and awareness. I observed that the children lacked a structured learning environment due to the absence of a teacher, which could impact their cognitive and emotional development. To fill this gap, I conducted informal educational sessions using storytelling and pictorial learning techniques. Additionally, I introduced mindfulness sessions, yoga, and recreational activities to help families manage the psychological stress that comes with prolonged medical treatment. Through one-on-one interactions with parents, I also helped document their experiences and challenges, contributing to content for the organization’s website to raise awareness and attract potential donors. By celebrating cultural events and engaging families in group activities, I aimed to create a sense of normalcy and emotional respite amidst their difficult circumstances.
Outcomes Achieved
The most significant outcome of my involvement was the emotional upliftment of the families and children at Access Life. Many parents expressed that the interactive sessions provided them with a much-needed break from their daily worries, while the children found joy in learning through play and creative activities. The yoga and mindfulness exercises helped parents and children manage. Additionally, the storytelling and educational sessions not only engaged the children but also helped them regain a sense of routine and curiosity. Through my efforts in documenting stories and interacting with the organization’s team, I contributed to their outreach and advocacy efforts, potentially influencing future funding and volunteer engagement.
Key Activities Conducted
1. Educational Engagement – Conducted informal learning sessions focusing on math and English through storytelling and visual aids.
2. Mindfulness & Well-being Sessions – Organized yoga and breathing exercises for children and parents to help them cope with stress.
3. Creative and Recreational Activities – Facilitated art and craft sessions, teaching children and parents how to create handmade items like greeting cards and cultural illustrations.
4. Community Bonding & Awareness Events – Helped organize Independence Day celebrations, a cancer awareness event at ISKCON, and Bhasha Utsav, fostering a sense of community and cultural pride.
5. Story Documentation for Fundraising & Advocacy – Engaged with parents to understand their struggles, contributing to narratives that could aid in donor outreach and awareness campaigns.
Through these initiatives, I not only contributed to the well-being of the families but also gained a profound understanding of the resilience and strength these individuals exhibit despite their hardships.
Seeing the amount of belief and hope they had even after all the hardships was commendable and reminded to be grateful and hold onto hope even when it gets tough.
