CENTRE FOR NEURODIVERSITY RESEARCH & INNOVATION
During my time at the Center for Neurodiversity Research and Innovation (CNRI), I contributed to developing a structured module aimed at improving the communication skills and daily living abilities of autistic children. While full implementation was not possible, the groundwork laid can serve as a resource for future interns and volunteers, ensuring continuity in intervention efforts. Additionally, our assessment of social skills using a standardized scale provided insights that can inform future targeted interventions for neurodivergent children.
Key Activities Conducted
Module Development: Designed a structured intervention module focusing on communication skills and activities of daily living, with guidance from supervisors and volunteers.
Social Skills Assessment: Administered a scale to assess the social skills of autistic children, providing valuable data for future interventions.
Communication Activities: For developing communication in activities in daily living. By using colours, colouring books and prompting the kids to ask for colours by modeling the behaviour of other volunteers or self initiated.
Results and Outcomes
Foundation for Future Work: The developed module can be refined and implemented by future volunteers to better support autistic children’s development.
Baseline Social Skills Data: The social skills assessment provided a clearer understanding of the children’s abilities, guiding future intervention strategies.
Increased Understanding: Through my limited but meaningful engagement, the initiative contributed to a better understanding of neurodiversity and the challenges faced by autistic children.
While my engagement was just a starting point, the work initiated has the potential to evolve into a more structured and impactful intervention with continued efforts from the organization and volunteers.
